Mark your calendar for GRIVA’s winter members’ luncheon on Monday, January 16th. This is a casual, fun gathering where we meet to announce our successes, trade research strategies, and share new genealogical books and Internet resources we have found helpful in our work. Guests are welcome, so bring a friend and introduce them to what GRIVA has to offer in the pursuit of family history.

The GRIVA members’ luncheon will be held at 12 p.m. on January 16, 2012 at Piccadilly Cafeteria at 8004 W. Broad Street in Richmond, VA. After selecting your meal through the serving line, proceed to the group room at the back of the restaurant. Hope to see you there!

When the Moon Has No More Silver picks up the story of Joan Peirce and her family through the years 1610 to 1620. This exciting tale of peril and persistence reminds us that it was not only men who contributed to the history of the Virginia colony. You can read an excerpt of the new book at this link.

While Connie Lapallo has a degree in finance from Virginia Tech and an MBA from the University of Georgia, her first loves have always been writing, teaching, and history. She was first professionally published at 16 as a youth reporter for the Richmond News Leader (now merged with theTimes-Dispatch.) Frank Nelson has been doing interpretations of famous men for several years. One of his best impressions is that of Francis Scott Key which he has presented to both adult groups and school children. It is your opportunity to learn more about this famous American and the events that led to the writing of The Star Spangled Banner. Mr. Nelson is a retired engineer of Norwegian descent. His presentations are historically accurate and laced with humor. It will be a program you don’t want to miss.

Archeology and Genealogy – Approaching History from Two Directions

How can we use the results of archeological studies to enrich our genealogy research? Phillip Boyce will share his observations based on over 35 years of participation in archeological digs.

Phillip Boyce grew up in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He graduated from Ferrum College with a degree in business. During his teen years, Phillip developed a deep interest in native Americans. From that early interest, Phillip developed an avocation for archeology. He has participated in numerous digs in Virginia including Winchester, the Eastern Shore, and along the banks of the James River. He has been a member of the Archeology Society of Virginia since 1977.

New GRIVA Luncheon Location?

Consideration is being given to changing the location of our twice yearly Members’ Luncheon. These meetings are casual “lunch and learn” gatherings where we share our research discoveries.

We currently meet at the Picadilly Cafeteria at 8004 W. Broad Street, Richmond. If you have ideas for a different restaurant or a more central location, please post a comment with your suggestion. Alternatively, if you would like to see the meetings at Picadilly continue, please let us know that as well.
